Kiriyama Prize

The Kiriyama Prize is conferred annually International Völkerverständigungs and literary prize for outstanding book releases from the Pacific Rim countries. Behind this is a non-profit organization called Pacific Rim Voices, based in San Francisco. The total prize money of $ 30,000. The sum is divided in equal parts to a work of fiction (novel, poetry or short story collection, no anthologies ) and a nonfiction book. In the first three years, only one overall winner was chosen. The price competition was first held in 1996.

Criteria

To be eligible for the Kiriyama competition in question, a new schienenes book must act content of culture and everyday life in one of the Pacific Rim large regions. Geographically, this includes A) the North Pacific Rim (Japan, China, Korea, etc. ), B) Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Indochina region, etc. ) C) Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, islands, etc.) D), the Indian subcontinent and e ) insofar as countries bordering the Americas ( North, Central and South America ) to the Pacific Ocean. The five regions are displayed on a map, which is on the homepage of the club. From large, cross-continental countries such as Canada or the United States only bordering the Pacific states are permitted for reasons of balance.

The books must be submitted in English. Whether in the original or in translation is not a concern. From 2008 to one-third of the prize money, so $ 5,000 is given to the respective translators. There should be a maximum of two authors per book.

Only approved publishers are entitled to propose their new books. Proposals must be submitted by the end of October. In the following three months, the decisions are made. The end of February will be published with the five final round participants the shortlist. The two winners - one each for fiction and nonfiction - will be announced in late March at a public event.

The juries consist of groups of five expert, depending on the nonfiction and fiction separated. Among them are commonly finalists from previous years and other well-known personalities of the literary life of the countries involved. All current and former members of the jury will be presented at the project site in a few sentences and are there permanently nachlesbar.

Incidents

The Fiction Prize 2007 was awarded to Haruki Murakami for his short stories band Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. The Japanese took him not to for personal reasons. The official website speaks of: " DECLINED to accept the award for Reasons of personal principle".
