Kitenge

Kitenge or Chitenge (plural vitenge in Swahili ) denotes colorful printed fabric firmer quality that is used in East Africa as garment fabric for blouses and skirts, as a sling, and even as a head covering.

In contrast to the Kanga with a similar purpose Kitenge is sold by the meter and is sold by the bale. Kitenge is also ornamented with designs, sayings or political slogans, but similar in the patterns of Kanga.

As a garment Kitenge is a sarong often worn by African women similar to chest or hip wound. More rarely, men Kitenge wear wrapped around the waist. Has its origins in the 18th century this mode of Zanzibar and is supported in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan and Somalia.
