Klaus Scharioth

Klaus Erich Scharioth ( born October 8, 1946 in Essen) is a German diplomat. From 1999 to 2002 he was Political Director and Head of the Political Department at the Foreign Office from 2002 to 2006 State with responsibility for security and defense policy. From March 2006 to June 2011 Scharioth was German Ambassador to the United States. Since August 2011 Scharioth is Rector of Mercator College of International Affairs. He also teaches as a professor of practice at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Massachusetts, USA.

Training

After graduating from high school in 1966, at the Goethe Schule in Essen, Scharioth studied for a year as a Rotary Scholar at the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho political science, sociology and psychology. A study of the law in Bonn, Freiburg and Geneva, he finished in 1973 with the first legal state exam. Until 1975 he studied International Relations, International Law and International Economics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Harvard Law School and the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

As financial statements Scharioth holds a Master of Arts ( 1974), a Master of Law and Diplomacy (1975 ) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1978 ), all from the Fletcher School.

Information Technology and Services

Scharioth occurred in 1976 in the Foreign Office a. After secretaries he had worked there in the Asia desk, in the press office and in the office, in 1979 he was sent for his first foreign assignment at the German Embassy in Quito. From 1982 to 1986 Scharioth served on the Planning Staff in the Federal Foreign Office and then worked at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from 1986 to 1990. At the same time he was deputy chairman of the UN Legal Committee and the Charter Committee.

From 1990 to 1993 Scharioth worked in the international law department of the Foreign Office and was thereafter to 1996 Head of Cabinet of the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. He then became head of the department of defense and security policy in the Foreign Office under Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel. From 1997 to 1998 he was a member of the Executive Staff of the Foreign Office, as of April 1998 as its director. He led subsequently the subdivision International Security and North America. In the tenure of Joschka Fischer Scharioth rose in 1999 for the Political Director and Head of the Political Department, and in 2002 to the Secretary of State.

The general public Scharioth was known for his role in the crisis unit of the federal government during the tsunami damage in the Indian Ocean in 2004 and during the kidnapping in Iraq in 2005.

From 13 March 2006 to June 2011 Scharioth was German Ambassador to the United States of America.

He is married and has three children.

Awards

Scharioth an honorary doctorate from the College of Idaho ( 2007), Chatham University ( 2007) and Old Dominion University (2010) was awarded. In addition, he was honored in 2000 with the Order of Marie - country Cross Second Class and 2011 with the Order of Merit 1st class of the Federal Republic of Germany.
