Knut Frænkel

Knut Fraenkel ( born February 14, 1870 in Karlstad, † October 1897 on Kvitøya, Svalbard ) was a Swedish engineer and explorer, who took part in the failed balloon ride Salomon August Andrée of.

Fraenkel studied at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1896 and received his engineering exams. After the meteorologist Nils Gustaf Ekholm had announced that he would not participate in the second trial of Andrées North Pole journey to Fraenkel reported on for the free space in the balloon and was accepted. In the spring of 1897 he traveled to Paris to familiarize yourself with the control of the balloon. In the summer he arrived on the Danish island belonging to Svalbard, where the expedition started. Just like the other two participants Frankel died during the expedition.

Their bodies were not found until 33 years later, returned to Sweden and cremated. The ashes were buried in a common grave in the Norra begravningsplatsen in Stockholm.
