Kogeler See

Geography

The lake is located in the north- west, belonging to the municipality of Five Lakes hamlet Kogel between the Plau and the Müritz in the east of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The size of the water area is 39.3 hectares, the average water level is 90.8 m above sea level. NHN. The surrounding shores reach heights of over 100 meters above sea level. The 1,700 meters long and about 270 meters wide lake is surrounded by a partly old trees. A larger forest area close to the north of the lake. Direct on-site is a swimming area with partial sand beach and a large lawn. The deepest part of the lake is approximately 13 meters.

There is a connecting trench to Hofsee at Satow. The mean water level of the Hofsees located about 50 cm below the Kogeler lake. The trench is very rare, and since then the water level of the lake is no longer artificially balanced, no longer filled with water. He served as overflow protection. So could any excess water that was pumped by the pumping station of the irrigation system into the lake to compensate for the removed quantities of water until the Satower Hofsee and from this point to run again in the Plau.

Use

Bathe

The bathing area was used by the adjoining school during the communist era and then again from around 1998 for the swimming training of the students.

Farm

In the time of the GDR intensive trout fish farm was operated in the lake. Thus, the water quality was below average at that time. Increasingly, it came in the summer to a strong algae bloom. Several dozen trout could escape from the nets and have settled in the lake. This was confirmed by anglers who were able to catch some copies.

Irrigation

At the time of intensive vegetable production in the region, the lake was used as a water reservoir for the irrigation of the fields. For this purpose, a pumping station was built on the southwest side at the beginning of the 1970s, which pumped the water to the surrounding fields. A wild swimming area, which was very popular, was abandoned for this purpose. The water was distributed through a misplaced pipe system to the irrigation systems. Sank the water level drops below a certain level, as make-up water was pumped from the Lake Plau in the Kogeler lake.

The pumping station was demolished in the late 1990s. A wall made of crushed granite, which delimits a small part of the lake, plastic pipes in the lake and the remains of the fence that surrounded the area, are the visible remains of the plant. Due to the high energy costs and the no longer existing demand for vegetables from the region, the operation of the intensive irrigation was not worth more. The operation of the plant has been set, then fell gradually. Vandalism continued to the buildings and furnishings. After the demolition of a smaller pump system was set up, which was not used in a long time and rarely.

On the west side of the lake ( Satower corner) is another, disused pump. It was used for domestic water supply to the adjacent LPG.
