Plauer See (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)

The Plau in Mecklenburg -Western Pomerania lies mostly in the district of Ludwigsburg pleasure Parchim, the northern and northeastern part of the county Mecklenburg Lake District in the same lakes. It is drained by the Elde from east to west and is part of the total federal waterway Müritz- Elde waterway with waterway class I; responsible is the Waterways and Shipping Office Lauenburg. Through the Global Nature Fund the waters of the title Living Lake of the Year 2011 was awarded.

The Plau, with an area of 38.4 km ² is the third largest lake in Mecklenburg -Vorpommern and the seventh largest in Germany. It has a north-south extension of about 14 km, a maximum width of 5 kilometers and an average depth of 6.8 meters. He has over the Elde connections to Fleesensee, Kölpinsee to and the Müritz in the east and the River Elbe in the west. On the western shore of Lake Plau is the eponymous town Plau am See, which is also the center of tourism in this region. Around the Lake Plau there are many tourist facilities, such as, situated near the eastern and northern shores, near the town of Plau and on the island of Plau Werder in the north campsites. The lake is surrounded by a biking trail.

The Plau was called in the 12th century Cuzhin or Kuzin, like the equivalent settlement and castle cutin or Kutsin on the western shore of the lake. Only later the lake was given the name of the city lying on the banks of Plau.

The northeastern part of Lake Plau is within the nature reserve north shore Lake Plau.
