Kohfidisch is a market town with 1442 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Burgenland in the district Oberwart in Austria.

The Hungarian name of the village is Gyepűfüzes and points to the importance of the village in the framework of the Hungarian Border Guard Gyepű in the Middle Ages.

History

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Gyepűfüzes. After the end of World War I German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

During the Second World War Kohfidisch was the scene of fierce fighting between associations of the German Wehrmacht and the Red Army. On April 6, there was even fierce close-quarters fighting in Kofidischer castle after it was units of the Soviet 26th Army managed to break into the place. The German 1st Mountain Division was able to attack and fight back for a few days even the Csaterberg involve back into the line of defense. After the withdrawal of German troops on the night of 11th to the 12th of April in the direction Lafnitztal Kohfidisch was finally occupied and while walked part of the Soviet front hinterland at the Styrian border fighting until the German surrender.

In 1971 the municipalities Badersdorf, Harmisch and Kirchfidisch were merged with Kohfidisch. 1993 Badersdorf became independent again. Market town is Kohfidisch since 1993 ( by VO 81, 7/ 1982).
