The Koninklijke Hollandse Maatschappij der Wetenschappen ( KHMW ) is a scientific society, founded in 1752. It is the oldest learned society of its kind in the Netherlands. In 2002, she was the 250th anniversary of the title " Royal " conferred. The aim of the society is to promote science. It has its seat since 1841 in the conservation Hodshon Huis on Spaarne Shore ( Spaarne 17) in Haarlem, North Holland. King Willem- Alexander is the patron. History
The company was founded in 1752 by the Haarlem Mayor moraine, arent with six other citizens of the city to life. This also took over the first presidency. The KHMW began as a Gentlemen's Club to discuss nature and art historical issues and was only only Dutch reserved. After the company was quartered at the beginning at the City Hall of Haarlem, they inhabited the Grote Houtstraat No. 51, until finally in 1841 finally moved into the Hodshon Huis in Spaarne 17, which was originally built by architect Abraham van hard for Catherina Cornelia Hodshon and today is a listed building. 1777 an economic branch was established under President Martin van Marum, which was spun off again in 1792 and transferred to the Dutch Society for Industry and Commerce. Under the leadership of van Marum, who later headed the Teylers Museum, was a zoological collection, which is considered the forerunner of the Naturalis in Leiden, built. Organizational structure
The Society is a nonprofit organization that is financed in particular by donations. Participants shaft can be distinguished in directors, and domestic and foreign members. While the former are more responsible for the financial support, the latter developed scientific activities. This dichotomy runs through the entire history of KHMW.
