Background

Svěrák originally planned a film that shows the world from a dog's point of view, which survived a flood. He changed his plans after he told parts of the story to his son Ondřej.

The film was inspired by the work of the Czech sculptor and draftsman Frantisek Skala, which, however, rejected a cooperation. On the technical development and visual effects Jakub Dvorsky was involved, the founder of the Czech game developer Amanita Design. During the post-processing to Svěrák and his team have focused on the removal of the rods and cords, with which the figures and vehicles were moved. Kooky is the most elaborate film of Svěrák. It contains three times more visual effects as Dark Blue World, the hitherto most expensive Czech film production. The budget for Kookie was 40 million Czech crowns.

The winter scenes were filmed in Ještěd, some woods near Bechyně and the National Park Voděradské bučiny as well as the sandstone rock in Drábské světničky. Production began in the fall of 2008. For the rotation period were 35 days planned, but 100 days were used because of difficulties.
