The Koralpe seen from the west

The Koralpe (Slovenian Golica; colloquially Koralm ) is a mountain range of Lavanttaler or Noric Alps in Austria between Mur and Lavant. The highest peak is the Great Speikkogel 2140 m.

Topography

The Koralpe is bounded on the west by the Lavant Valley, in the north by the pack-saddle, on the east by the West Styrian hill country and in the south by the Soboth, a mountain saddle between the Drau Valley and Sulmtal. Along the Berggrats is the boundary between the Austrian provinces of Carinthia and Styria. Although the highest areas of the built-up of crystalline rocks mountain range alpine in character, the majority of the area is characterized by low mountain forms.

The main peaks are:

  • Big Speikkogel ( 2140 m): the most popular hiking destination. In addition to a shelter are located around the summit and transmitter of the Austrian Broadcasting Services (ORS ), and one each radar system of the Federal Army and the Austro Control.
  • Reinischkogel ( 1463 m): The slightly upstream in the northeast mountain stick whose area is a popular destination for residents of the state capital Graz, can come up with several restaurants. From Hauptgebirgszug the Reinischkogel is well defined by the depth line torrent Schrogentor - Upper Modriachwinkel.

On the Soboth in the far south of the mountain range, is the reservoir Soboth whose water is used for electricity generation in Lavamünd. Here the Koralpe passes (Slovenian Kozjak ) in the Poßruck or Radlkamm. The southern slopes, which lies partly in Slovenia, has a highland region and is drained by some of gorge-like V-shaped valleys towards the river Drava. The highest elevation on the southern slope is located on the border between Carinthia and Slovenia Hühnerkogel (Slovenian Košenjak, 1522 m).

The area of the Kor is crossed by the Austrian North-South distance path ( route 05).

Geology

The Koralpe consists of a large, pushed onto the Stubalpe ceiling unit. To the west of the Saualpe limited, the Koralpe disappears in the east under the sediments of the Styrian Basin. In the south, the Koralpenkristallin ( Altkristallin ) continues in the train of the Bachem (Slovenian Pohorje ).

The mountain was smoothed by glaciation and erosion. It is composed of metamorphic rocks. Typical are the plate gneisses, which are degraded and marketed under the name " Stainzer plates ". Another special feature is the eclogites occurring in the gneisses.

In the field of wine level pegmatites occur, which lead spodumene, a lithium-containing silicate and form the largest lithium deposit in Europe. Other raw materials that occur in the mountain range are quartz and marble for glass production, feldspar for the manufacture of porcelain, mica for insulation purposes and hematite.

The documents of the deposit customer reported a number of other ore and mineral deposits, such as also a gold deposits in Germany mountain.
