Korphe

Korphe is a small rural village in the Gilgit -Baltistan to belong Baltistan Division in the north of Pakistan, which in the Karakoram, located on the banks of the river Braldu in the Skardu District. The village is situated between the village Askole and K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

The village is of general interest, as it has a village school that was built by the Central Asia Institute ( CAI). The CAI promotes in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the creation and construction of schools, when the village community assures that at least ten percent of all village girls go to school. Furthermore, it was a spectacular suspension bridge built over the River Baldru to allow other students surrounding villages including Afghanistan's access to education in the village. The school in Korphe was the first of the 131 schools that built the nonprofit organization CAI in Pakistan since 1996.

The place and the people living there to play a role in the book Three Cups of Tea Greg Mortenson mountaineer and co-founder of the CAI, the previously climbed the K2 because he wanted to forget the death of his sister. On K2, he was seriously ill and two carriers brought him to her house after Korphe, where he saw the plight of the population and a school class with many children without teachers and school house where the village the one dollar per day for a teacher and for the school construction could not afford.
