Kosmic Free Music Foundation

The Kosmic Free Music Foundation ( short KFMF or Kosmic ) was a worldwide group of computer musicians, artists and programmers from the PC demoscene. Most of the members were from the U.S., Canada and Australia. They created using trackers mainly the music styles of Techno, Trance and Ambient and created various artworks and demos. All of their productions were offered for free download via bulletin boards (BBS) and the Internet. In the 1990s, KFMF was known for many of the top musicians from the tracker scene to have among its members. Her early presence on the Internet made them one of the first netlabel. The leader of Kosmic was Dan Nicholson, who used the pseudonym Maelcum within the demoscene.

History of development

The group was founded in 1991 with the name Kosmic Loader Foundation ( KLF, but without direct reference to the British music group The KLF ). The original intention of the group it was BBS intros and ANSI type (similar to ASCII art ) to create.

1992 began to publish Maelcum MOD music files under the name of the group, which KLF - oriented music was. Inspekdah deck ( later named Venom, not identical with the Wu -Tang Clan member Inspectah Deck ) operating at home in New Jersey, a BBS called Trancentral II, which was for the group platform on which they communicated and published her music ( " Trancentral " was also the name of the recording studio and the " spiritual home " of the KLF ).

From 1994 KLF began by itself to use the Internet by they set up an FTP server and a web page. First, they had only a few members, but the group grew rapidly, since in its IRC channel "# trax " recruited new members. At that time, many musicians began to use in the KLF Multitracker from Renaissance to generate MTM instead of MOD files.

In 1995, the group changed its name to Kosmic Free Music Foundation in order to clarify the reference to music instead of demos and intros. After they had recruited a coder named gooroo they presented their first demo "Flight" in full length on the NAID party in Quebec, with which she received third place in the competition. The Kosmic members Maelcum and IQ were also in the category " Music" second place with " Hitchhiking Reticulan ". This track was published later produced on the private label of Maelcums Area 51 Records CD of FTZ " Nothing Is True." More demos and music discs followed, with the publication of individual pieces of music remained its essential mainstay.

1997 Kosmic offered their first archive CD for sale on, up to 1996 and in addition contained all their music releases some new audio tracks. Some members began to bring out instead of tracker formats their music in the new MP3 format. Many members of the original # trax - rush had since retired or left the group for their own projects. There are no published two more archive - CD sets, but at the beginning of the 2000s the group had finally drifted into inactivity.
