Krásnohorské Podhradie

Krásnohorské Podhradie ( until 1927 slovak " Krasna Horka - Podhradie "; Hungarian Krasznahorkaváralja ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia.

Location

The village lies in the valley basin Rožňavská kotlina, at the foot of the Slovak Karst and Volovské Hills, 5 km from Rožňava and 65 km from Košice.

History

The history of the village is connected with the castle Krasna Horka. It was first mentioned in 1322 as Kraznahurka and developed from a settlement below the castle.

Until 1919 it belonged to the county Gemer the Kingdom of Hungary and then to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Because of the First Vienna Award in 1938-45 it belonged again to Hungary and since 1993 has been part of the present-day Slovakia.

  • The originally Gothic Roman Catholic Church of All Saints in the 14th century, rebuilt in 1787 in the classical style
  • A late Baroque chapel with the tomb Andrássy
  • Andrássy Mausoleum, built in 1903-1904 by the Munich architect Richard Berndl

In the area there are many excursions in the Slovak Karst and its caves.

Population

According to the census of 2001, there were in place in 2359 inhabitants, of which 47.2% Hungarians, Roma and 28.1% 23.4% Slovaks. 67.8 % reported as a confession to Roman Catholic.
