Krister Stendahl

Krister Stendahl (* April 21, 1921 in Stockholm, † April 15, 2008 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian. He was professor of New Testament at Harvard Divinity School and 1984-1988 Bishop in the Diocese of Stockholm.

Life

After studying Protestant theology at the University of Uppsala Stendahl in 1944 was ordained to the priest and worked in Uppsala, where he in 1954 with a study on the Gospel of Matthew as Dr. theol. received his doctorate. In the same year he went as a professor at the Harvard Divinity School, where he also served as dean from 1968 to 1979. At the same time he worked with as a moderator of the Committee on the Church and the Jewish people ( CCJP ) of the World Council of Churches in changes of policy in relation to the churches to Judaism. Appointed in 1984 as bishop in his hometown, he sat among other things, strengthening the commitment of the Church of Sweden for peace, justice and integrity of creation, but also for the ordination of women ( about which he had already published in 1966 an important exegetical work) and the rights of homosexuals in the church. Following his retirement in 1989 he returned again to Harvard back and taught still there and at Brandeis University.

Work and significance

In addition to his contributions to inter-religious, especially concerning the Jewish-Christian dialogue, Stendahl is mainly for his essay " The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West" ( first in 1963 ) is known. With his thesis that the Western interpretation of the theology of Paul looked at the doctrine of justification as a key category wrongly, he worked before the so-called New Perspective on Paul. The essay was published in 1978 in German.
