Kristianopel

Kristian Opel (formerly Christian Opel ) is a small Swedish village with 80 inhabitants on the southern end of the Kalmar Karlskrona in the municipality, which lies in the province of Blekinge County. The settlement was a strategically important city in the Danish border to Sweden in the 17th century.

Objects which today bear witness to this meaning, are the 3 -kilometer-long city wall with bastions in the Italian style, built 1603-1606. From the Berlin Wall, the West and the south side are best preserved. In addition, there was a bulwark, a series of rammed earth in the piles, which should hinder progress the enemy before the city wall at. On these piles today stands a windmill.

History

Kristian Opel built in 1599 on the orders of the Danish King Christian IV laid scheduled to replace the former city Avaskär. During the Kalmar War the city was occupied briefly in 1611 by the Swedish prince Gustav Adolf. The Swedes burned the place and could demolish the old church. The present Trinity Church was built 1618-1624. 1622 city rights of Avakär and the not far distant city LYCKA were transferred to Kristian Opel. After the temporary loss of civic rights and a comprehensive fixing of the place in 1637 Kristian Opel received city rights in 1648 again.

The city was thus the easternmost part of a series of fortifications built in Denmark at that time along its border with Sweden. A short time later, the town was devastated by Swedish troops. In order to decrease the importance of the city also contributed to Blekinge in 1658 fell to Sweden in the Treaty of Roskilde. Nevertheless, the attachment was set repaired in the same year. In 1663 it was decided to demolish the defenses, but in 1670 and 1672 they were restored again. A year later it was decided to preserve the site.

After Sweden had in 1676 transferred to the garrison of the fort to Karlshamn, Kristian Opel was taken on September 25th of that year by a Danish battle group. The Danes put the half-ruined walls in status and made the place an important basis of the Snapphanar ( populations Skånelands that loyal to Denmark behaved ). On February 22, 1677 Kristian Opel was conquered again by Sweden. The fortifications were partially removed, as you looked at the place as dangerous for Sweden's security. 1678 was the command that not a single house should stay and the population had to move to the places Ronneby, Vaxjo and Karlshamn.

1952 Opel Kristian was incorporated into the municipality Jämjö.
