Kuhlhasseltia

Kuhlhasseltia is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It consists of nine species of herbaceous plants that are native to East and Southeast Asia.

Description

The species of the genus Kuhlhasseltia have an underground rhizome above ground continues to be a leafy shoot axis. The leaves are asymmetrical oval to nearly round, the base merges into a short petiole comprising the stem axis tubular. In Kuhlhasseltia javanica leaf color is blackish green upper side, lower side red.

The racemose inflorescence is terminal. The inflorescence axis is comprised of a few high leaves and is hairy. The lance-shaped, ciliated bracts are about as long as ovary and pedicel together. The ovary is twisted, it can be hairy. The flowers are 'upside. The two lateral sepals are larger than the upper sepal, they adhere to their base together and comprise the lower part of the lip. The lateral petals adhere to the upper petal. The lip is divided into three parts: the basal part, the Hypochil is adherent to the edges of the column and forms a hemispherical to conical bulge. In this bulge two elongated appendages are present. Im pretty long middle part, the Mesochil, the edges are folded inwards and provided with a weakly trained, smooth or toothed bar. The front part, which is Epichil, entire or bilobed. The column is semi-circular in cross-section, the oval stamen includes two club-shaped pollinia attached directly to the small viscid disc ( Viscidium ) depend. The scar consists of two interconnected surfaces. The separation between scar tissue and stamen ( rostellum ) is straight in the axis of the column and is divided into two parts at the end.

Occurrence

Kuhlhasseltia species are widespread in East and Southeast Asia, they come in Japan, Korea, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Guinea before. They colonize altitude 900-2000 meters. They grow in humus rich soil in shady woods.

Systematics and botanical history

Kuhlhasseltia is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Goodyerinae. After Dressler can this be further subdivided into two groups; Kuhlhasseltia is in the larger group with only a coherent stigmatic surface. Very similar are the genera Chamaegastrodia and Odontochilus. Vexillabium is a synonym of Kuhlhasseltia.

The genus Kuhlhasseltia was erected in 1910 by Johannes Jacobus Smith. The name honors Henry Kuhl and Johan Coenraad van Hasselt. Type species is Kuhlhasseltia javanica.
