Kuopio Province

The Kuopio Province (Finnish Kuopion lääni, swedish Kuopio län) is a former province ( lääni ) in Finland. It existed until 1997 and had Kuopio as its capital. The territory of the province of Kuopio was last congruent with the present landscape Savo exclusive to the territory of the former municipality Kangaslampi which by their incorporation in Varkaus came to Northern Savonia in 2005.

The Kuopio province goes back to the 1775 to the Swedish king Gustav III command. Founded in Savo - Karelia back. This comprised roughly the present-day landscapes Savo and North Karelia and the northern part of South Savo. Through the provincial reform of 1831, the province of Savo - Karelia was renamed Province Kuopio, Savo also came today to the newly founded province of Mikkeli. 1944 some eastern parts of the province of Kuopio were ceded to the Soviet Union after the Continuation War.
