North Karelia

North Karelia (Finnish Pohjois- Karjala, swedish Norra Karelia ) is a landscape ( Maakunta ) in Finland. From 1960 to 1997, formed a separate province ( lääni ). North Karelia is part of the historical split between Finland and Russia Karelia region.

North Karelia is one of the most sparsely populated and least prosperous regions of Finland. The largest city in the region is Joensuu.

North Karelia is the easternmost part of the continental territory of the European Union. Only Cyprus is located further east. There is a regional partnership with the district of Kusel.

Description: The coat of arms in red showing two silver arms right from the plate edge breaking forth, swing the right with a silver golden joint protection, goldgegrifftes sword and left a goldgegrifften scimitar. Floats a golden crown between the arms.
