Kontiolahti

Kontiolahti [ kɔntiɔlɑhti ] (Swedish historically Kontiolax ) is a municipality in eastern Finland with 14,245 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It lies in the middle of the countryside on the shores of North Karelia Höytiäinen Lake about 20 km north of Joensuu.

The World Championships in 1999 and previously the competitions in men's relay at the World Championships in 1990, as a replacement for Minsk or Oslo, were decided in Kontiolahti. The World Championships in 2015 were awarded to the city.

Kontiolahti benefits greatly from its proximity to Joensuu, the largest city of North Karelia.
