Kurt Baldinger

Kurt Baldinger ( born November 17, 1919 in Binningen; † January 17, 2007 in Heidelberg) was a Swiss linguist, linguist ( linguist ) and medievalist.

Life and career

Baldinger attended the Real Gymnasium in Basel. He received his Ph.D. in 1948 in Basel with his teacher Walther von Wartburg. He was from 1949 to 1962 director of the Institute of Romance Philology at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in East Berlin. After his habilitation in 1952, he was from 1953-1957 professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1957 he was appointed as Professor of Romance Philology at the University of Heidelberg, where he remained true to its rector, he was in a politically tumultuous period 1968/1969. Since 1958 he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. Baldinger was 30 years editor of the Journal of Romance Philology and his life, the most important member of the French etymological dictionary. He has published numerous books and articles, and countless reviews. He led several major dictionary projects, was a member of many academies at home and abroad and was five honorary doctorates. He had his academic profile, especially in the French Studies, the Hispanic and general linguistics.
