Kurt Malangré

Kurt Malangré ( born September 18, 1934 in Aachen ) is a former German politician ( CDU). He was for many years a member of the Council of the City of Aachen and 1973-1989 mayor of the city. From 1979 to 1999 he was Member of the European Parliament.

Life

Malangré was a student of the Kaiser -Karls -Gymnasium. After graduation he studied law and political science at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. He is the brother of Heinz Malangré.

His political career began in November 1969 with the arrival in the city council. Ten months later he was elected in September 1970 to the Presidents of CDU. In 1972 the election was followed by the mayor and the following year he took over the office of the Mayor, which he held until 1989. From 1989 to 1993 he was county chairman of the Christian Democratic Union, the Council of the City of Aachen he belonged until 1994.

During his tenure, he was very keen for the foundation of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, and served for many years as the President of the Council.

On his initiative, the graffito "Lovers " of the Aachen muralist Klaus Paier 2011 was declared a National Monument. This mural was created illegally in 1979 during his tenure as mayor.

Malangré is a member of Opus Dei ( Supernumerarier ), a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. In 2007 he founded the Kurt- Malangré Foundation.

Moreover Malangré honorary member of the KStV Carolingia Aachen in CT, Charles Archers and many other clubs. He was on the proposal of its predecessor Jost Pfeiffer as honorary chairman of the CDU Aachen elected by a large majority in 2005. This honorary chairmanship, he handed over in November 2013 for health reasons.
