The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ( KNUST short; German Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology ), according to the University of Ghana, the second university in the country. It was named after the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.

History

The founding history of KNUST began with the founding of the Kumasi College of Technology on 22 January 1952. On this date 200 student teachers from Achimota were transferred to the new university. Officially, the KNUST was awarded on 22 August 1961, the university status by administrative act. In October 1952, the Faculty of Engineering (English School of Engineering ) and the Department of Commerce (English Department of Commerce ) were opened at KNUST and the first students were included. In 1955, the Faculty of Engineering of KNUST concluded a cooperation agreement with the University of London, which the student first time allowed to store a Bachelor in Engineering from an external exam at the University of London.

The Department of Pharmacy was established in January 1953 by the inclusion of the former School of Pharmacy (English School of Pharmacy ) of the Korle -Bu Hospital opened in Accra by the KNUST. The Department of Agriculture (English Department of Agriculture) was also opened in 1953 and organized a variety of courses in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. Likewise, a Division of General Studies (English Department of General Studies ) was established to support the other departments and remove tests in science and art.

Already in 1957, the growing university has been extended to the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and buildings. With the growth in student numbers was decided to specialize the KNUST on the subjects of science and technology. As a result of this decision, the Teacher Training College was swapped with the art school in January 1958, and included in the Winneba Training College, Winneba. In 1959, the Department of Trade after Achimota was outsourced. From this was later at the University of Ghana in Legon, a suburb of Accra, today's Department of Administrative Sciences.

In December 1960, a University Commission was set up to discuss a recommendation for the development of higher education in Ghana by President Nkrumah. It was the question open as to whether the University College of Ghana and the Kumasi College of Technology should be summarized in the independent University of Ghana. According to the Commission report in early 1961, the government decided against the solution of a major university and founded next to the University of Ghana, Legon, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi by the Law of 22 August 1961.

After the military coup against Nkrumah on February 24, 1966, the KNUST in University of Science and Technology has been renamed. Only in 2000, the university was renamed back to its original name Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
