KYPCK

KYPCK (Russian КҮРСК spoken, Kursk ) is a Finnish Doom Metal band.

Band History

After the dissolution of Sentenced in 2005 guitarist and songwriter Sami Lopakka took a long musical break and founded with two friends, the merchandising company Northern Tribe, which manufactures clothing series for metal fans. Finally he did in the winter of 2006/2007 with some friends - singer Erkki Seppänen, JT Ylä- Rautio on bass and producer Hiili Hiilesmaa on drums - and realized together with them a KYPCK, an idea to which he planned to again and again since 1999 had. In the summer of 2007, work began recording for the debut album Cherno, which was produced and mixed by Hiilesmaa. The mastering was done by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios. On 23 January 2008, the single was released in 1917, which also includes a video was added later. Shortly thereafter KYPCK graced the cover of the 54th edition of the Inferno, the biggest metal magazine in Finland. On March 8, the band played at the release of their debut album, a concert in the bar PSK Kaupunni of the ex- Sentenced - member Vesa Ranta in Oulu. Four days later, Cherno was released and debuted at # 11 in the Finnish album charts. On 30 May 2008 KYPCK signed a contract with the label Century Media, the Cherno published on 18 July 2008 worldwide. The second studio album Nizhe appeared on 9 February 2011.

Band concept and style

KYPCK is named after the Russian city Kursk, with particular emphasis on the spelling in Cyrillic alphabet. According to Erkki Seppänen singer, the band wanted a short, masculine sounding names whose meaning is known outside of Russia.

The lyrics are completely in the Russian language; in the CD booklet are in Cyrillic script, where one transcription was found in the Latin alphabet are available. Responsible for the texts are Lopakka and Seppänen, the latter had made up all translations into Russian, he speaks Russian fluently and has lived several years in Saint Petersburg and Moscow, where he was employed at the Embassy. Mainly, the songs deal with current and historical events in Russia. So Stalingrad is about the policy of repression of Stalin, 1917 is about Hiilesmaas great-grandfather, who was with the militia in Saint Petersburg and during the February Revolution in 1917 fled to Finland and finally disappeared in America. Some of the songs have individual stories of suffering, such as alcohol abuse and dysfunctional relationships on the topic.
