La Mure

La Mure is a commune with 5059 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes.

The origin of the name of La Mure is not fully understood. Recent investigations lead him back to the pre-Celtic or Mor Mur, which refers to a rocky outcrop or boulders.

Geography

La Mure is located 40 kilometers south of Grenoble. The city is situated in the French Alps on the plateau Matheysine 850 meters above sea level.

History

The first mention of La Mure dated from the year 1050.

During the seventh Huguenot War La Mure was established in 1580 by the troops of the Duke of Mayenne, Charles II de Lorraine, duc de Mayenne, besieged. The 37- day siege cost about 1,200 of the 9,400 inhabitants former life.

On the morning of March 7, 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte reached the city, where you gave him a triumphant reception, after he had left the exile on Elba on March 1. From La Mure, from Napoleon moved to Laffrey, where he still on the same day on a battalion of King Louis XVIII. met.

The history of La Mure was more than a century significantly affected by mining. Around the year 1806 the industrial mining began in the anthracite mines in the area, which was a major economic factor in the region dominated by agriculture.

To transport the coal to Saint -Georges -de- Commiers 1888 a rail link, the Chemin de Fer de La Mure, inaugurated between the two cities. Today the line serves as a museum railway.

Sister City

La Mure maintains since 1983 a city partnership with Marktredwitz in the Fichtelgebirge ( Germany ). First contacts between the two cities, however, were linked in 1961: Since 1962, every year a student exchange between the Marktredwitzer High School and the Lycée in La Mure takes place.
