History

Already in Roman times was the governor Agrippa a channel through the ancient Rubrensis dig to connect the city of Narbonne and the Mediterranean. Thanks to this great channel - 30 m wide and 3 m deep - Narbonne was a rich coastal city. In the 14th century, but changed the river Aude, who was responsible for the water supply of the canal, suddenly its course and no longer flowed through Narbonne. As a result, the city became impoverished and lost more and more important. Finally, the city extended her withered Canal to Moussoulens where you could make a water connection to the Aude again.

Only in 1787 a navigable connection with the Canal du Midi was created by the construction of the Canal de Jonction.

Economic Importance

Cargo shipping has gradually lost importance. Today, the canal is mainly used by sports and houseboats.
