The Nuremberg Doll ( " La poupée de Nuremberg" ) is a comic opera in one act of the composer Adolphe Adam. The libretto was written by Adolphe de Leuven and Arthur de Beauplan and was first translated into German by Ernst Pasque. Experienced its world premiere this play on February 21, 1852 at the Opéra -Comique in Paris; in Germany it was seen on 26 November of the same year for the first time in Berlin.

Action

The toy retailer Cornelius has constructed a human-like doll and now lives in delusion, to be able to bring this to life. Like a golem it is of the elements of nature - will soon come to life - influenced by the position of the stars. Cornelius has decided in his confusion, when this creature is alive, to give it to his son Benjamin to wife.

To distract his father, Benjamin goes along with his father in the evening. During this time, Henry meets at the toy store secretly with his mistress Berta. As Cornelius and Benjamin come a little earlier than planned home, Berta hidden in the workshop of Cornelius. She puts on the clothes of the doll and as Cornelius brings his creature from the workshop, it suddenly becomes alive. But she behaves so wild and impetuous, that Cornelius can switch it off again only with difficulty.
