Labeobarbus

Labeobarbus capensis

Labeobarbus is a genus of medium to large African cyprinids. The genus name is composed of Labeo and Barbus and refers to the similarity of Labeobarbus with the other two carp fish species.

Features

Labeobarbus species are 11 cm to one meter long and have, as Labeo and Barbus species, an elongated, laterally flattened body only slightly. Their scales are structured by parallel grooves. The dorsal fin is supported by 8 to 11, usually only 9 or 10 branched fin rays. The gill rakers are numerous and well developed. The lips are pronounced often have a Mittellobus and one or two pairs Bartel.

Labeobarbus species have a hexaploid chromosome set, ie they have six sets of chromosomes.
