Labeoninae

Labeo barbatus

The Labeoninae, in German also known as Frans Lipper, Saugbarben or lip barbels, are a subfamily of the carp family (Cyprinidae ). (Not in the Philippines ) are 350 to 400 species in Western Asia, on the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia west of the Wallace Line, and with the two most species-rich genera Labeo and Garra also in tropical Africa south of the Sahara and the Nile before.

Features

The Labeoninae is small to medium sized carp fish that have an elongated, often adapted to strong currents body, a forked caudal fin and a constant under foot. Among all carp fishing, they show the greatest diversity in terms of the morphology of their lips and the other the mouth of respective structures, such as the rust Ralf old, the upper lip covered for the most part. Behind the lower lip may be located a suction cup, the fish makes it possible in strongly flowing water to attach to solid substrates. Labeoninae species are three to 90 cm long, the most remain below a length of 20 cm.

Genera

A total of 35 genera with 350 to 400 species have been assigned to the Labeoninae. Two of the genera Labeo and Garra contain more than half of the species.
