Features

The wingspan of the butterfly is from 32 to 39 millimeters. The ground color of the forewings varies from bright red-brown reddish- brown to dark. Tang, kidney and ring blemish stand out clearly and are tinted yellow gray or light brown. The boxes next to and below the kidney and ring stain are intensely stained. The Saumfeld is brightened and the wavy line usually thin and indistinct, as well as the far away from the hem W characters. The hind wings show a light gray -brown color.

The egg is hemispherical with flattened base. It is yellow with a darker central zone. The surface has sharp longitudinal ribs.

By striking, broad, pale yellow and upwards fine black limited sidelines brown in most caterpillars are unmistakable.

Similar Species

The species resembles the reddish forms of Gemüseeule ( Lacanobia oleracea), which can however be detected at the yellowish kidney brokering and the clearer and reaching to the hem W characters.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widely distributed in the temperate climates of Europe and Asia to the Pacific coast and Japan. E. & H. Urbahn describe it as an animal of the bogs, marsh meadows and floodplains.

Way of life

The wet meadow Kräutereule usually forms two generations per year, the second generation is only partial. The moths of the first generation fly from late May to mid-July, the moths of the second generation in August. The moths are mainly crepuscular and nocturnal, but also suck on the day or at dusk at various flowers such as sage (Salvia ). They come to artificial light sources, sometimes to the bait. The caterpillars live from August to September. They feed on the leaves of water hemlock ( Cicuta virosa ), fever clover ( Menyanthes trifoliata ) and other lower plants. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Endangering

The wet meadow Kräutereule is in damp places and usually found only very locally individually in Germany. On the red list of endangered species it is in Category 3 (endangered ) out.

System

The genus is Lacanobia of hacker et al. (2002) divided into three subgenera. Lacanobia splendens is placed in the subgenus Diataraxia Hübner, 1821.
