As Lacs de Maclu be two adjacent lakes in the western section of the French Jura, referred to Jura in Franche-Comté. They are located on 779 m above sea level. M. in a depression in the high Jura, in the region of the five lakes near Le Frasnois, about 12 km south of Champagnole.

The Grand Maclu has an area of ​​21 hectares, a length of about 1.1 km and a maximum width of about 300 m. Its greatest depth is 24 m. The water surface share the municipalities Le Frasnois and La Chaux -du- Dombief.

The northeast subsequent Petit Maclu has an area of ​​5 hectares, a length of 500 m and a maximum width of about 120 m. Its greatest depth is 11 m. It is situated entirely on the ground of Le Frasnois community.

Both lakes are flanked to the southeast from the ridge of the Bois de Ban (up to 960 m above sea level. M. ). On this ridge of limestone, which drops very steeply to the lakes, is the Belvédère des quatre Lacs, a viewpoint overlooking the four lakes Maclu Grand, Petit Maclu, Lac de Narlay and Lac d' Ilay. The western bank of the Lacs de Maclu other hand, is flat and has a swamp belt on. Through a hill of the Grand Maclu from Lac d' Ilay is disconnected. The lakes are situated in a valley on the plateau of Champagnole. During high stages of the various ice ages, the pool was lined by the Jura glaciers with marl and clay layers, so that despite the karstic underground lakes could arise.

The Lacs de Maclu are fed by rainwater and small sources in the riparian area. Normally, the Petit Maclu drained via a 100 m long canal to the Grand Maclu. Because of the Petit Maclu but drinking water for the village of La Chaux -du- Dombief is derived, the flow regime can also be reversed. The Granx Maclu is drained by a creek west to Lac d' Ilay.

The landscape around the Lacs de Maclu is under protection. In the wetlands around the lakes can be found for the region of rare plant communities, including the cutting Ried ( Cladium mariscus ).
