Chinese Lagerströmie ( Lagerstroemia indica)

The Lagerströmien or Kräuselmyrten ( Lagerstroemia ), less often mentioned crape myrtle, a plant genus of the family Lythraceae are ( Lythraceae ).

Description

The Lagerstroemia species are deciduous trees or shrubs. The young branches are mostly square. The simple leaves are opposite depending on the type or alternate, petiolate or sessile. The leaf margins are smooth. The stipules are mostly small.

The terminal inflorescences are racemose or zymös. The hermaphrodite, sixfold flowers are mostly radial symmetry, only the stamens are acyclic. The cup is funnel-shaped flowers. It is formed a double perianth. There are six intergrown sepals present, or they are missing. There are usually many (50 to 100), less often six to twelve, acyclic been arrange tete, fertile stamens present. Three to six carpels are fused into a superior ovaries; with a stylus with a capitate stigma. Pollination is by insects ( entomophily ). There are trained fruit capsules containing winged seeds.

Dissemination

The species of the genus are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia. To the north, the range extends to Japan.

It is used as an ornamental plant in the Mediterranean region and can also be used as a container plant. Because of their resistance to frost the Lagerstroemia ( Lagerstroemia indica) can be planted in the wine region in sheltered areas. USDA climate zones 7-11.

System

The genus Lagerstroemia was established in 1759 by Carl Linnaeus. He named the genus after the friend of his Sweden Magnus Lagerström (1691-1769), director of the Swedish East India Company was Linnaeus and supplied with plant material.

Use

Several species and their varieties, mainly because of their blossoms, as ornamental plants in culture. Especially from the Chinese Lagerströmie ( Lagerstroemia indica) many forms have been bred. They are also suitable for chilly winter gardens.
