Lake Burgas

The Burgas Lake ( Bulgarian Бургаско езеро ) is surrounded and west of the city of Burgas. He was until 1942 the name " Waja " ( Bulgarian Вая ). The Bourgas Lake is the largest natural lake in Bulgaria. He is a Liman and is located on the eastern north-south migration route of migratory birds, Via pontica. It is surrounded on three sides by the city of Burgas. Its length is 9.6 km, width 4.5 km. The surface of the lake is 27.6 square kilometers. The castle Assee has an average depth of 0.7 m and a maximum depth of 1 m.

The Burgas Lake

The Bourgas Lake is separated to the east from the Black Sea through the narrow spit Kumluka on which are a part of the industrial zone south and the Burgasser quarter Pobeda and Akaziite.

In the southern part there were in earlier centuries to connect to the Mandra Lake, which has given way to urban development. Today, the Bourgas Lake is connected by canal with the Black Sea at the end by a lock. At the south of the lake lies the district of Gorno Eserowo. In the northern part of the lake is bordered by the districts of Dolno Eserowo and Slaveikov.

In the western part rivers flow Lijtoska, Sandardere and Tschukarska. The water is slightly salty. The shore of the lake is surrounded by a green ring of reeds. In this first part of a nature reserve has been established that today covers the whole lake. 1989 Serr by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area was classified. 1998, the lake was included in the CORINE list and 2003 in the Ramsar List.

History

Until the 1950s, the castle was famous Assee together with the Mandra Lake for its abundance of fish and was used economically. Especially developed here over the centuries the fishing industry in Bulgaria. After the construction of the oil refinery Neftochim the lake was heavily polluted and disturbed the ecological balance. In recent years, especially after the lakes have been declared nature reserves, the situation changed. Today fishing is again, thanks to the recovering fish stocks, possible.

The Bourgas Lake is a freshwater lake and has a great wealth of fauna and flora.

Fauna

The lake has 25 species of fish, 245 species of birds and 60 species of invertebrates. 671 of bird species are listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria.
