Lake Çıldır

The Çıldır Gölü ( Çıldır Lake; Հիւսիսեան Armenian, Georgian ჩრდილი, Russian Чилдыр ) is a freshwater lake in the Turkish province of Ardahan. It is the largest freshwater lake and the second largest lake in eastern Anatolia and is located near the border with Georgia and Armenia. It is 1959 meters high and is surrounded by the mountains Kısır Dagi and Dagi Akbaba. The Çıldır Lake has an area of 123 km ² and a maximum depth of 42 m. His discharge is the Bach Arak Su.

The lake water is used for irrigation. In winter it freezes over. Between Akçakale and Gülyüzü a ferry.

History

In the late Iron Age Çıldır the lake was probably on the territory of the Kingdom of Iga, which is presumed to its southwest shore.
