The Koroneia Lake (Greek Λίμνη Κορώνεια spoken Limni Koroneia, alternative designations Greek Λίμνη Λαγκαδά spoken Limni Langada or Greek Λίμνη Αγίου Βασιλείου spoken Limni Ajiou Vassiliou, .. Mazedon / bulgar name Лагадинско Езеро spoken Lagadinsko ežero ) is a lake in the Mygdonien ( Mygdonia ) region in the Regional District Thessaloniki administrative Region of Central Macedonia in northern Greece.

The Koroneia Lake is located in a valley between the Chalkidiki peninsula and the Chortiatis massif in the south and the mountains of the Vertsikos in the north. To the east is separated by a narrow isthmus, the Volvi Lake, west of the lake is separated by the foothills of the Massif Chortiatis from the city of Thessaloniki. Years ago, approximately 1,000,000 Koroneia lake and Volvi lake formed a large lake in the Valley of Mygdonien, this drained through the valley of Rendina east into the Gulf Strymonic the Aegean. Later, the two lakes were separated in the mygdonischen sink, the drain ran dry in the Aegean Sea.

The surface of the lake is 75 meters above sea level. The lake covers 48 km ², the catchment area of the lake ( catchment area ) amounts to 350 km ². The average depth of the lake is Koroneia to 3.5 m, the maximum depth of 9.5 m. The volume of water is 175 x 106 cubic meters. The Koroneia lake is the lake with the highest alkalinity in Greece.

South of the lake runs the National Road 2, north of the Sea Highway 2 ( Egnatia Odos ). On its banks are from the northwest counted counterclockwise: the small town Langadas, Kavalari, Agios Vassilios, after which the lake is also called, Vasiloudi, Yerakarou, Langkadikia (Thessaloniki ), Scholari, Evangelismos. Close to Agios Vassilios is also the convent Emmaus.

The Koroneia lake silted up and is therefore always smaller. The isthmus between Koroneia and Volvi lake grows accordingly. In the 1950s, extensive fishing took place in Koroneia still lake. In the 1970s, the Koroneia lake had an average depth of 5 m. In the early 2000s, the depth of the lake has dropped to 50 cm to 1 m on average. 2002 already threatened a complete dehydration, since the beginning of July 2008, the lake is completely dried up.

Koroneia lake is part of the Natura 2000 network, the European network of protected natural areas.
