Lake Miccosukee

Lake Miccosukee is a large, flat and partly swampy lake on the districts of the administrative units Jefferson and Leon County in the state of Florida in the southeastern United States. The lake is located south of the town of Miccosukee and forms the border between the two neighboring counties.

The water level is influenced by an active sinkhole at the northern end of the lake, the water level indicates the current water table of the Florida Aquifer, as the sinkhole extends into the aquifers. Underground of the lake with the St. Marks River is connected. The name of the lake is attributed to Native Americans, the Miccosukee, who lived on its banks. Likewise, the lakeshore was settled by the Apalachee.

Today the lake is used as a recreation area, especially for the hunting of waterfowl. A rare, occurring only at three locations plant, the " Miccosukee Gooseberry " (Ribes echinellum ) occurs in two places at Lake Miccosukee.
