Leon County (Florida)

The Leon County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Tallahassee.

Geography

The county has an area of ​​1,818 square kilometers, of which 91 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jefferson County, Wakulla County, Liberty County and Gadsden County.

History

The Leon County was formed on December 29, 1824 from parts of Gadsden County. It was named after Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer and probably the first Europeans to set foot on Florida.

Parts of the 1936 designated National Forest Apalachicola National Forest extend into the County.
