Union County (Florida)
The Union County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lake Butler.
History
The Union County was formed on 20 May 1921 parts of Bradford County. It was named to commemorate the concept of unity. In Union County is Florida's state prison for men.
Geography
The county has an area of 647 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Baker County, Bradford County, Alachua County and Columbia County.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 living in Union County 13,442 people in 3,367 households and 2,606 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 73.62 percent White, 22.84 percent Black or African American, 0.66 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.04 percent from other races groups; 1.50 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.55 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,367 households out of which 41.8 percent of children and adolescents under 19 years living with them. 57.7 percent were married couples living together, 15.0 percent were single mothers and 22.6 percent were non-families. 19.5 percent of all households and 7.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.13 persons.
21.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 to 24, 39.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.5 percent of the population was 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 183.0 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 215.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 34,563, and the median income for a family $ 37,516. Males have a median income of $ 28,571, women $ 22,083. The per capita income was $ 12,333. 10.5 percent of families and 14.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
