Gilchrist County, Florida
The Gilchrist County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Trenton.
History
The Gilchrist County was formed on December 4, 1925 from portions of Alachua County and named after Albert W. Gilchrist, Governor of Florida ( 1909-1913 ).
Geography
The county has an area of 921 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Columbia County, Alachua County, Levy County, Dixie County, Lafayette County and Suwannee County.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2010 lived in Gilchrist County 16,939 people in 7,307 households. The population density was 18.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.9 % White, 5.3% Black or African American, 0.5% Indigenous and 0.4 % Asian Americans. 1.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.5 % of various ethnicities. 5.0 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 32.4 % of all households lived in 31.6 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 71.2 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.58 persons and the average family size is 3.02 people.
25.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.5% were 20-39 years old, 27.4 % were 40-59 years old and 23.5 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 41 years. 52.2 % of the population were male and 47.8 % female.
The median income for a household was $ 36,521, while 21.9 % of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 96.59 % of the population spoke Spanish 2.63% and 0.78 % had a different mother tongue.
