Madison County (Florida)

The Madison County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Madison. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

History

The Madison County was formed on December 26, 1827. It was named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. His tenure was from 1809 to 1817.

Geography

The county has an area of 1,854 square kilometers, of which 62 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hamilton County, Suwannee County, Lafayette County, Taylor County and Jefferson County.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Madison County 19,224 people in 8,457 households. The population density was 10.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.6 % White, 38.8 % African American, 0.5% Indigenous and 0.2 % Asian Americans. 1.6% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.3% in different ethnic groups. 4.7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 30.8 % of all households lived in 31.0 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 68.4 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.48 persons and the average family size is 3.00.

24.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.2% were 20-39 years old, 27.8 % were 40-59 years old and 22.5 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 40 years. 52.2 % of the population were male and 47.5 % female.

The median income for a household was $ 34,361, while 21.6 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 93.63 % of the population spoke Spanish 4.77% and 1.60 % had a different mother tongue.
