Sumter County (Florida)
The Sumter County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) Bushnell.
History
The Sumter County was formed on January 8, 1853 from parts of Marion County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
Geography
The county has an area of 1,503 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lake County, Polk County, Pasco County, Hernando County, Citrus County and Marion County.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Sumter County 53 345 people in 20,779 households and 15,043 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.60 percent White, 13.78 percent Black or African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.41 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.16 percent from other races groups; 1.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.29 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 20,779 households out of which 18.8 percent of children and adolescents under 19 years living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households and 13.8 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.62 persons.
16.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 5.9 percent between 18 to 24, 23.3 percent between 25 and 44, 27.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 27.4 percent of the population was 65 years or older. The average age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 113.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 113.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,073, and the median income for a family $ 36,999. Males had a median income of $ 27,346, women $ 21,145. The per capita income was $ 16,830. 9.6 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
