Putnam County (Florida)

The Putnam County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Palatka.

History

The Putnam County was formed on January 13, 1849 from portions of Alachua County. After whom it was named, is not ascertainable. There are two versions. One says it was named after Israel Putnam, a hero in the French Indian War and later general in the American Revolutionary War. The second version says that it was named after Benjamin A. Putnam, a local politician in Florida, and an officer in Seminole War.

Geography

The county has an area of ​​2,142 square kilometers, of which 273 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: St. Johns County, Flagler County, Volusia County, Marion County, Alachua County and Clay County.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 to 24, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.5 percent of the population was 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 97.6 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
