History
Foundation
The establishment of the national league Westphalia was in September 1945, initially under the designation 1st Division West decided as sporty successor to the Gauliga Westphalia. In the first season, which began in February 1946 and was discharged in the two geographically separated squadrons East and West, those who participated 18 teams in the game mode, which had played 1939-1944 in the Gauliga. The season winner of the first season were FC Schalke 04 and SpVgg Erkenschwick. For a finale, it did not come.
Historical development
The division played until 1948 and in the season 1949/50, in two seasons, in season 1948/49, and in three seasons from 1950 to 1952 as a single-track league. Between 1952 and 2012, the division was then six decades held unchanged in five seasons. Since there are four seasons.
Until the 1955/56 season the division was the highest league in Westphalia. With the establishment of association league Westphalia in 1956 the division was initially the second highest, after the founding of the Oberliga Westfalen 1978, only the third highest Westphalian division. After the dissolution of the Oberliga Westfalen in favor of the NRW-Liga in 2008, the division was the second highest division. Since the game class structure reform in 2012 and the reintroduction of the Oberliga Westfalen the national league is again only the third highest league in Westphalia.
In the German league system the national league was in establishing first class and slipped several times since then by introducing high playing levels ( Oberliga West in 1947, 2nd Oberliga West in 1949, fifth division Westphalia in 1956, Oberliga Westfalen 1978, Regionalliga West 1994 and last 3 Liga 2008 ) to today the seventh level from the league system.

Second division
