Larry Stabbins

Larry Stabbins ( born September 9, 1949 in Bristol ) is a British tenor and soprano saxophonist of modern jazz.

Life and work

Stabbins, who began eleven years with the saxophone, since the mid-1960s played in Bristol with Keith Tippett; in addition he was a member of soul bands. Around 1970 he came to London, a member of Tippett's large-format Centipede was partially and briefly also by Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath. He participated in the Ealing workshops of John Stevens and played with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and in other formations that occurred in the Little Theatre Club, such as those by Terry Day, Marcio Mattos, Ken Hyder, Maggie Nicols and especially Roy Ashbury, with the he formed a duo and 1976, the board Fire Bricks Without presented. Then he went on with Peter Cusack and Tony Wren's Mama Lapato, but also with Tippett's Ark.

In 1979 he became a member of the quintet of Tony Oxley, with whom he played for many years, and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, but also played in a quartet of Eddie Prévost. In 1983 he was a founding member of the successful pop music in the band Working Week, which existed until 1991 and for which he wrote most of the songs with Simon Booth. He also belonged to Peter Brötzmann alarm Orchestra and the following March combo. In addition, he starred in Trevor Watts ' Moire Music and Louis Moholos Spirits Rejoice and was in the GDR with a quintet of Heinz Becker on the road, belonged to the Ulrich Gumpert, Radu Malfatti and Peter Kowald.

After the end of Working Week he worked at QRZ? with the fusion of jazz and rap and graduated from studying philosophy at King's College London. Then he founded a trio with Pat Thomas and Mark Sanders and a duet with Louis Moholo, played in various groups with Howard Riley, the Dedication Orchestra, Keith Tippett Tapestry and Annie Whitehead Soupsongs. In 2003 he dropped " Monadic " a solo album which was very well received by critics.
