Lashio ( burmese လားရှိုးမြို့, Shan: လႃႈ သဵဝ်ႈ ) is the largest town in northern Shan State, Myanmar on a foothill overlooking the valley of the Nam Yao river northeast of Mandalay. The town is the terminus of the railway line Mandalay - Lashio. Lashio is the administrative center of the district of Lashio. The population is composed of Shan, Burmese and many Chinese. Formerly, the city was the seat of a Shan prince ( sao pha ). The city played an important role in the fight against the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The city was the starting point of the so-called " Burma Road ", on which Chang Kai Shek was provided with food and weapons. 1988 a fire destroyed most of the wooden houses.
