László Sternberg

László Sternberg (* May 28, 1905, † 1982) was a Hungarian football player and football coach.

Career

Earlier in his career played László Sternberg at VAC Budapest, the Zuglói VII kerület AC and the Ékszerész SC. After the latter was in 1925 closed due to a bribery scandal, he left the club and joined as many Hungarians mid-1920s to Italy. There, the defender signed a contract with the second division club Unione Sportiva Novese, who was three years earlier still by Italian masters (but in a year in which there are two championships competing associations were ). The association withdrew during the year of the championship game and the Hungarian changed in 1926 in the top flight to SG Andrea Doria, where he became a regular player.

From 1927 only player of Italian descent were allowed in the Italian football championship be used, which Sternberg forced to leave Italy. He returned to Hungary and joined the Újpest FC. With the brogue he finished third in the championship and was first convened in March 1928 in the national team, where he made his debut in the 3:4 defeat against Italy in the framework of the European Cup of the national teams from 1927 to 1930.

After this season, he accepted an offer from the United States and joined the American Soccer League with the New York Giants, where his compatriots Béla Guttmann and Erno Black were under contract. After just one month and seven inserts it came to the outbreak of the Soccer War, which led to a split in the league. Sternberg signed with the newly formed New York Hakoah, which played in the Eastern League Soccer and where in addition to the expatriate players of SC Hakoah Vienna and Hungarian national team as Lajos Fischer and Dezso Grósz worked. The Hakoah won the U.S. Open Cup against St. Louis Madison Kennels, where Sternberg was used in both finals. In 1929 it came to the reunification of the two leagues and Sternberg remained with the now merged with the Brooklyn Hakoah club until 1932 and then played even briefly for the New York Americans, the team of Erno Black.

After the league was in financial difficulties, Sternberg returned to Hungary and played back at Újpest. With the brogue he brought in four seasons twice the Hungarian championship and also played back in the national team. At the World Championships in 1934, he was captain of Hungary, who failed to Austria in the quarterfinals. His last game for the national team, he played in May 1936 against Italy.

In 1936, he moved to France where he played for Red Star Paris. In the season 1937/38, he worked as a coach at Újpest. Then he returned to the U.S., where he still aground until 1943 for the New York Americans. He then worked as a referee in New York.
