Lateral sulcus

Also called Sylvian fissure, sylvian sulcus, fissure or lateral sulcus lateralis - - The Sylvian fissure is a broad lateral furrow of the brain.

It separates the parietal from the temporal lobe. It is found in both hemispheres, but in the left longer. It is based on the operculum; is the insular cortex in depth. It contains the temporal gyri transverse processes, which are part of the auditory cortex. The formation of the Sylvian fissure in man takes place already in the 14th week of pregnancy. This makes it one next to, inter alia, the longitudinal fissure to be the earliest developed sulci.
