Latife Tekin

Latife Tekin ( born 1957 in Karacefenk, Kayseri Province, Turkey ) is a Turkish writer and screenwriter.

Life and work

Latife Tekin spent her early childhood in Karacefenk, a small village in the Central Anatolian province of Kayseri. In 1966 she came with her family to Istanbul, where she grew up in a gecekondu district. Of the seven children in her family, she was the only one who reached a higher degree.

Your " torn childhood," the contrast between the rich folkloric traditions of the Anatolian village population and the primitive living in a slum -like Behelfssiedlung on the outskirts of the city, processed Tekin later in their books. It was after she had first worked for a short time after the visit of the high school at a telephone company, a freelance writer and published in 1983 her debut novel Sevgili Arsız Ölüm, which describes the life of a relocated from rural areas to Istanbul family. This first work was loud Wilperts Encyclopedia of World Literature " sit up " and the British The Independent certified Tekin later on the novel Referring a remarkable gift to the field of phrasing and generating images. The book was a great success.

Tekins sequence work as a novelist was less because of its literary merit attention, as mainly due to their criticism of the political situation in their country, they could be included in it. Was of particular interest to the reading public that Tekin while also sectarian groups to which they had belonged in the 1970s itself, violently criticized. Her second novel, Berci Kristin Çöp Masalları'nı of 1984, became in Turkey one of the most widely read books. He explores the emergence of a Gecekondus at a dump in Istanbul. It is the first and only novel by Tekin, which was published as a German translation. Under the title Honigsberg the German first publication appeared in 1987 at the Hamburg publishing on Gallows Hill and in paperback license issue in 1993 with the Swiss Union publisher.

1984 Tekin came with a screenplay produced as a film writer. Bir Sevgi Yudum was directed by Yılmaz Atıf. The feature film with actors and actresses such as Kadir İnanır in the lead roles has won awards at major film festivals in Turkey.

Several of her books have now been published as translations in various languages. Tekins style is often associated with the Magic Realism.

Latife Tekin lives and works as a freelance writer and screenwriter in Istanbul.
