Lauderdale, Tasmania

Lauderdale is a town and suburb of Hobart in the South East of the Australian state of Tasmania. At the 2006 census, the population was found to be 2.388. It belongs to the Local Government Area Clarence City and is located on the east side of the narrow isthmus between the South Arm Peninsula and the main island of Tasmania. The city is adjacent to the Ralphs Bay in the west and with the Roches Beach at the Frederick Henry Bay to the east, where most of the population lives. Along the nearby Seven Mile Beach you will find a popular residential area for commuters to the city of Hobart.

The Walker Corporation plans to build a large residential area called Canal Estate at the Ralphs Bay before Lauderdale. In contrast, there were many protests on environmental grounds: The residential area would occur on sensitive marshland and affect the habitat of migratory birds and rare species of fish. The former Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon supported the project intensive. The Save Ralphs Bay, Inc., with the support of local campaigns against it.

Plane crash in 1946

On March 10, 1946 launched a Douglas DC -3 of the Australian National Airways with 21 passengers and 4 crew members from Cambridge Aerodrome with the aim of Essendon airport. Less than two minutes after takeoff the plane crashed on the Seven Mile Beach, where all the occupants perished. At the time it was Australia's largest civil aviation disaster.
