Läuferbrunnen

The runners fountain stands on the runners in Bern and belongs to the old town of Bern fountain from the 16th century.

He was created around the year 1545 by Hans Gieng and his companions, originally stood in front of the last house on the Nydeggstalden and was set in 1827 to its present location where it had been a wash-house. Until the 17th century it was called Stalden wells or wells at stores Tor ( because of its proximity to the city gate at the Untertorbrücke ).

The fountain figure represents a herald or quick messenger who is traveling on foot and is therefore called runners. On his breast he wears the coat of arms of the city of Bern, on the shoulder of the runner Spiess and on the back the runner bush. With his left hand he has the handle of a short sword, and it is preceded by a bear cub, which is also equipped as a messenger.

The fountain sculpture is a copy from the year 1953. The original is located in the Historical Museum of Bern.
