Launceston Castle ( cornish castle Lannstefan ) in Launceston in England was a Norman castle of the Counts of Cornwall and is now in ruins. The ruined castle is now under the management of English Heritage. To visit an admission fee is charged.

The castle was also the prison of the city.

During the Second World War a hospital was housed within the walls of the castle.

The southern gatehouse

In the Middle Ages this door led out into the private deer enclosure of the count. After you've gone through the gate, the road went on a fortified bridge over a ditch. The gatehouse had heavy doors and a portcullis. Above the gate is a suitably comfortable apartment was in the gatehouse.
